Failed first attempt at WP7 application submission (updated with reasons)

miFlashlightI thought I would check miFlashlight's application status ooooone more time tonight.  OH SNAP!

miFlashlightI thought I would check one last time on miFlashlight's WP7 Marketplace application submission.  Good news is I found out what's going on, bad news....well....

Failed

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH man!  I thought I nailed the app cert requirements.  The only hiccup is, when I got look at the details, there's nothing listed there (maybe yet?) as to why it failed.  No emails neither.  Uh, how am I supposed to know what to change here guys?  I hope this is just a small hiccup with timing and I'll get an email tomorrow...uh today.

Ok, let's put a positive spin on this!  Hey, gotta find a good way to look at this cause I'm going to bed and I don't want to be tossing all night!  We're learning this together and I'll blog about what I did wrong so you won't make the same mistake I did.  How's that?

Anyways, this could be ok afterall, I did notice tonight, my app was better suited to the Tools category (where there's already five flashlights there LOL), the pictures submitted shouldn't have transparent backgrounds and I would like to implement a Trial feature.

So it's time to step away from the computer, take a break to sleep, regroup, and try it again tomorrow. Too late to grab a coffee tonight, but tomorrow it'll be a good time to grab a coffee and get coding.

Late night edit, I just knew I wasn't going to goto bed with this "YOU FAILED!!!!!!!!!!!" in my head! DOH!

Fancy that, searching the forums actually found me my solution!  DOH!

If you click on the View details link (from your dashboard) you'll see the Action dropdown.  Now, I've seen that before but nothing interesting before now.  But in the forum posting, they say to select View Test Results.  Low and behold, it's now got values in the listbox I can select!

 View Test Results

Drum roll please................................Ah ok it downloads a PDF file (look up at the top of your browser for any IE messages about downloading files)..........suspense is kill'n me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  DOH!

Explanation

(Click on image to see complete PDF) (And yes, the submission time was indeed 3:21AM)

I used a flashlight from the Office Clipart, and I thought I read on the copyrighted page I could use it cause there wasn't any explicit copyrighted notice/info on the images properties, and I thought I had changed it enough to make it different.  But nope, somebody caught it.  So....lessons learned, you can't cut corners on your graphics!!!!!!!!!!!!

The good news is, that's the only reason I failed!  So, once I create a new flashligt image, create the right sizes, I'm all set to reapply again.  So overall, this is good news, I can easily fix why miFlashlight failed, I learned how to get the failed test results and I got to see what they look like.  Nothing to be afraid of any more!  COOL!

NOW!  I can goto bed with action items for tomorrow night!  Very cool!

Re: Failed first attempt at WP7 application submission (updated with reasons)

Sorry to hear your app failed certification, and for such a silly reason. If you buy Office, why can't u use the clip art ? MS is getting 30% out of it anyways.
How long did i take from submission to fail notification ? I waiting since 4 days for any progress report ;-)

Re: Failed first attempt at WP7 application submission (updated with reasons)

Hi Bert, thank you for the words of support! I would have thought I was ok too, but apparently not. Oh well, I have another plan up my sleeve (my wife's MUCH more artistic than I LOL).

Mine took 3d. Did you say you were waiting 4d for any progress? DOH! You should be hearing something soon. I mean mine was last night LATE, so I'm guessing the WP7 processing department is working overtime for this push.

Thanks again Bert. Please let me know what your website is and your application, I would love to check it out! I know there's going to be a lot of apps, so if I have a personal connection to one, I'll check that out first (well, as long as I can afford it! LOLOLOL). TGIF and have a good weekend!

Re: Failed first attempt at WP7 application submission (updated with reasons)

Actually when I look at your screenshot are you sure the clipart is the problem? I would have thought this error referred to your use of the windows logo/brand without permission... "Use of branded items (logos/trademarks) has been approved by the brand owner."

Just cut out the windows logo.

OH WOW! I never thought of that! I have to ask and find out more details on this! This brings up a great question (I smell a blog coming) about how to get further explanation to specifically what went wrong.

Thank you Colin for your insight and keen eye! Very cool! I did think of that but figured MS can't knock me for "shining a light on WP7" but maybe you're right! I'll post a question now! Thanks.

Re: Failed first attempt at WP7 application submission (updated with reasons)

I think ColinF has nailed it - it's likely the Windows Phone logo you are using. I doubt that they are trying to scan through all possible clipart to find if you have sourced it (plus, how would they know whether you have in fact licensed the clipart?).

Re: Failed first attempt at WP7 application submission (updated with reasons)

Part of me thinks you're right, but then another part of me thinks I'm screwed? Oh well, tonight, I tweaked the graphics quite a bit and resubmitted it again. This time I was able to update the Category, update all the backgrounds and even put in a backround image for Zune. I hope it works this time.

Thank you very much Elton for your comments and support.

Ola,

Hey, I'm at a WP7 event learning about this. If you're not already working with someone @ MS, contact Aaron Stannard aaronst@microsoft.com. He's a Startup Developer Evangelist that can work with you to get through this and answer questions.

I know you're trying to do this "the old fashioned" way, but I thought this might help.

Congrats on miFlashlight :-)

Re: Failed first attempt at WP7 application submission (updated with reasons)

Thank you very much Susy! I appreciate the email and the shot in the arm! What WP7 event are you at? How are you liking it? Are you doing any app dev for WP7?

Thanks again for leaving a comment!

Re: Failed first attempt at WP7 application submission (updated with reasons)

Hi Peter, when you resubmit after a Test Failure, do you have to increment the the version, and if so, which one - the one in the WPAssemblyInfo, the one in AssemblyInfo or the one in the upload screen on the website?

Re: Failed first attempt at WP7 application submission (updated with reasons)

Hi Rod, GREAT question(s).

Short answer, the one on the website.

Medium answer, I have more information on my latest blog which talks about passing certification and lessons learned.

Longer answer (I'm KNOWN for brevity eh LOL), the website's the one I'm told is the one you have to rev up, BUT reving your assembly file versions isn't a bad idea neither (and using source control is another good idea too LOL). I didn't know there was a third option in the WPAssemblyInfo? I just looked at this url (http://www.pchenry.com:8080/svn/miFlashlight/trunk/WP7/Properties/AssemblyInfo.cs) to miFlashlight and it's where the assembly info is stored, I can't find the WPAssemblyInfo you mentioned. But then again, I'm not at my VS setup right now, so I'll check later on. Let me know what you find out.

Thanks for coming back and commenting!
