TortoiseSVN 1.7.0 and Icon Overlays on Windows 7 x64 Don’t Play Well Together

Did you get an email recently from TortoiseSVN telling you about the great new 1.7 version? If you like your icon overlays and using Win 7 x64, you might want to stick with 1.6.16.
I like to stay current with my software, especially when it comes to my development environment. But last night I got cut on the bleeding edge! Ok, it’s not THAT big a deal, but it might help you out. I installed the latest’n’greatest TortoiseSVN 1.7.0 yesterday on my Windows x64 box, and the install seemed to be updated a bit, cool. But I sniffed something very odd going on when I went to my code directory expecting to see my familiar Green/Red overlay icons….uuuuhhhhhh where are they? HUH? What? Oh, I’ve run into this before……diiiiiiiiiiid I install the x32 version on my x64 machine? NOPE! I still have the MSI file and it’s the x64 bit version. hhhmmmmm another reboot? Nope. Uninstall, redownload, reinstall, reboot…..nope, still no icon overlays. hhhmmmmm So what’s the big deal you might ask? Well, if you LOVE your keyboard shortcuts, and you use your Windows-E keys, you can quickly navigate to your code repository and quickly/immediately see if you have files changed requiring commits or not. I actually have special hot keys on my keyboard to immediately open up my source code, so this info is literally one click away. Yes, I do use Visual Studio (with a VisualSVN and yup, shortcuts for update, commit, log, revert, …), but sometimes I’m editing files outside of VS, and I still need a way to commit/revert those changes, so I depend on my icon overlays. Bad news if they’re missing! DOH! But! There is good news!!!! After uninstalling 1.7.0, downloading and installing 1.6.16, I was able to see my icon overlays again! YAHOO! In fact, that screen cap above is from after doing the reinstall. What’s even better news (yes, there’s more haha) all my settings (and your’s I hope) are retained! Now THAT’S GREAT NEWS IMHO! Now that you know how to get back YOUR icon overlays, it’s time to grab a coffee and get coding! I didn't see a bug reported in the Tortoise forums... Could you do so to give better visibility to the team and others who may want to upgrade?

Hi Steve, thank you very much for commenting, I really do appreciate it. Last night I did try to find the support forums, but I wasn't able to (at least not in the 20m I tried looking, it wasn't immediately evident, maybe not enough caffeine? LOL). But seriously, now that you've given me a link, I will do it now. Thank you again!

Hi Steve, I tried to use the link you sent, but I don't see anywhere I can create/add a new bug, am I missing something? Unfortunately if I need to create an account in order to login, in order to create a new bug.....unfortnately things are a bit too busy at work, I can't do that. Sorry.

Re: TortoiseSVN 1.7.0 and Icon Overlays on Windows 7 x64 Don’t Play Well Together
Had same issue I actually got these to start working but I am not sure which thing I did fixed it. Also they only show on the upgraded repositories
1. Upgraded the working copy to the new version. 2. TortoiseSVN Settings -> Icon Overlay -> Status Cached. Set it to shell hit OK. Then went back to settings and set to Default hit OK and restarted now I have the icons on Upgraded repos.

Hi Andy, thank you for your comments! I'm really glad you were able to get it working! Sweet! But they only show on the upgraded repositories? DOH! hhhhmmmmm I think I might wait a week or two while I decide if/when I'll go through the upgrade again. (I'm kind of hoping that'll give "them" a bit of time for a migration/upgrade path).
Thank you for leaving your comments, I appreaciate it, and also, it helps other with a solution when they find this blog entry! Have a good week!

Hi Barton and CrazyTasty. Two things, I apologize to Barton for not approving your post back in Oct. I always (well, until now, always TRY) to ackowledge people's comments, but this one slipped past me, I apologize. But thanks to CrazyTasty, it came to light and I can now properly thank you both for your comments, and I'm glad I could help you out! Have a good week!

Re: TortoiseSVN 1.7.0 and Icon Overlays on Windows 7 x64 Don’t Play Well Together
As if 1.7.10, icon overlays are still not working. Going back to 1.16.16, as originally suggested. (And while attempting to download 1.7.11, I got a Zoom Downloader and some stupid thing called WhiteSmoke--all kinds of crap that comes from false "download" buttons on every SourceForge download page

Re: TortoiseSVN 1.7.0 and Icon Overlays on Windows 7 x64 Don’t Play Well Together
I take it back. Finally found the right button for TSVN 1.7.11 on the download page, along with the instruction to do the install TWICE--running the "Repair Install" the second time.
Following that procedure restored the icon overlays.

Re: TortoiseSVN 1.7.0 and Icon Overlays on Windows 7 x64 Don’t Play Well Together
Hi Eric! Glad you found the right links to download it. Are the overlays working correctly now? Since writting this, I've moved onto TFS, so I'm not using SVN anymore, BUT there are other people (I hope? hahah) using this for information. So thank you for commenting. Have a good weekend.
