Windows Phone 7.8 is NOT for Visual Studio 2012 Development

imageThis weekend I’m TRYING to install Windows Phone tools but am getting COMPLETELY blocked.

I’m COMPLETELY frustrated, and worst yet, it’s my own fault!  Yesterday I tried installing the Windows Phone 7.8 sdk update.  After doing that, I noticed there were NO WP templates in VS 2012.  Look below at the lack of Windows Phone templates.

What I SHOULD be seeing is this (thank John).

Well, then I read, to get 7.8 to work, you need 7.11…….rinse and repeat.  Download, install, and STILL NO DICE!  Today, armed with a coffee and CRANKED MUSIC (thanks 89.9!) and uninstalling all my WP tools and reinstalling….STILL NO TEMPLATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Ok, screw it!

Then I read in the custom install for 7.1 SDK, it’s ONLY going into VS 2010 directory. HUH!?  FINGER FLICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!  Windows Phone 7.x tools ONLY work with VS 2010.  AH CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  This is where I realized I did this to myself!!!!!!!!  It’s been a few months since doing WP dev, and it hurt me!

hhmmm so then if I want to do WP dev in VS2012, then I have to try out 8.0 sdk.  That’s cool, that sdk can do 7.8 dev. I don’t have a new WP8 phone yet, so doing 8.0 apps isn’t an option yet.  BUT after downloading and starting the install, I’m greeted with this beauty!

image

AAARRRRGGGGGGGGG  AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

SO!  This is where I’m at.  Install Windows 8 to do phone dev in VS2012, OR stick with VS2010 and reinstall everything again.

I WANT to install Windows 8, but with Ottawa IT Camp coming up soon, AND the amount of backups, reinstalls, setups I have to do, I’m just not ready for that.

Now that you know what happens when you forget a KEY PIECE of information, don’t make the same mistakes I made.  Now that I got THAT off my chest, it’s time to grab a coffee and get coding!

PS  Thanks to John, Mitch and Sébastien for your support and help!
