You installed VS 2013 and now you see a bunch of different coloured vertical lines, WHAT ARE THEY?

So, you’ve bitten the bullet and installed Visual Studio 2013!  Now you see a bunch of vertical lines/bars in your code.  What are they and how do you toggle them on and off?  Great question (I actually had a friend, John, ask me about).

The quick answer is, they are vertical guides to help you keep track of your code blocks, your loops, condition statements, etc.

This is what I mean.

Now, the next logical question is, how do you turn them off and on again?  Great question!  Goto Tools, Options, Productivity Power Tools, then Other Extensions, then toggle the “Show code structure in the editor” option.

To be honest, at first, I LOVED this feature.  But after a few weeks, I’m not so sure?  Why?  Well, with the auto-format on Save, and the CTRL+S shortcut, you know very quickly if you’re code is “good” or not (ie you got the right method names, parameter types, etc).  If you don’t get the formatting, then you need to do more work.  Also, I try to keep my methods, loops, condition code blocks tight, small, so they’re usually not so big as I can’t see the end block.  Having said that, there are some times you just need a big block and you need some help.  Well here it is.

Now that you know what those lines are, and how to turn them off and on again, it’s time to grab a coffee and get coding!

PS  The more astute readers (not me, I just realized it tonight actually), those lines are actually colour coded!  If you’re paying attention, you’ll notice the class line colour (gray) is different from the class line (jade) from the property line (blue) from the get/sets (grey).  Interesting.  Now if I could just remember that!  LOL
