Do you get links to Windows Phone Marketplace and they do not work for you?

WPMarketplace Do you get asked to download, install or even eval an app on the Windows Phone Marketplace?  BUT when you click on the link, you cannot download the app?  I think I can help you out!

For a while now (not quite sure how long?) some friends would ask me to check out one of their apps (thank you to those people who thought enough of my input to ask!).

The thing is, I would always click the link and unfortunately the Install button would never be visible.  HUH? (yes, yes, I know, there is text to change the region NOW, but I think that text is relatively now, I’m sticking with that excuse! LOL)

I KNOW I have a valid account (I know I paid my WP annual subscription even LOL).  The first few times, I emailed the people, they would patiently reply “I emailed you the cultural insensitive URL so you should be ok.”  But I wasn’t and for a while my work around was to just change the ‘en-us’ to ‘en-ca’ on the URL and bingo, THERE’S the Install button.

The thing is, WHY do I always have to change the en-us to en-ca?  Why can’t my browser just put the en-ca for me?

Well, it turns out it’s something on my box…and maybe yours too if you’re running this little snafu?!  You see, ever since I can remember, I’ve always installed Windows with the English-US keyboard, region, date formats, etc.  One reason was cause keyboard tended to switch to french on me magically (well, ok not magically but with my shortcuts, sometimes it was my fat fingers LOL), and also cause with Windows coding (and now WP) programming is usually done with a US prejudice (for good for bad, hey I don’t write the rules, but when you TRY to use the enumeration for COLOUR, the compiler always complains it wants Color and not Colour).  SO when I installed Win8 last fall, I setup as if I was en-US.

Win8RegionSettings  (screen cap from Win8)

THERE in lies my problem.  As soon as I change my region over to English-Canada, it all works like Gretzky scoring goals “from his office.” LOL  Smooth as silk.  (Note, if you have any browsers open when you make the change, you might not actually change their region until you close all of them down.)

Now that you know how to install WP apps quicker, as well as get to review pages quicker, it’s time to grab a coffee and get coding!

PS  Special thanks to Sebastien Lachance, and Atley Hunter for their patience with my questions about their marketplace links.

To fix any link you get and make it automatically go to the right locale, simple change it to be:{app guid}

eg: if user gives you a link to

but your local isn't es-es, it's en-us, or if you don't know what your proper locale is, just change that link to be:

and it will auto-direct to the correct locale

Thank you Brandon! I was HOPING someone would give me the way to get the cultural-insensitive URL. That's what I was getting, but as you say, it auto-directs you to the correct locale. However, in my experience the correct locale, is determined from your machine, not your Marketplace account. Have you found that to be different?

Thank you again for commenting!!!! I really do appreciate it! Have a good week!
